Ponte Vedra-area golfer Michael Brennan wins third PGA Tour title in Japan
Michael Brennan, a 24-year-old golfer with ties to the Ponte Vedra Beach area, won the Baycurrent Classic on Sunday, Oct. 11, securing his third PGA Tour title in 12 months.
Brennan finished at 16-under 268 at Yokohama Country Club in Japan, edging Jacob Bridgeman and Keith Mitchell by one stroke. He earned $1.44 million from the tournament's $8 million purse, the largest of the eight FedExCup Fall events, according to PGA Tour payout data.
The victory came in his 33rd career PGA Tour start, making him the fourth-fastest player to reach three tour wins since 1970, according to Wake Forest University Athletics.
Brennan holds off challengers in final round
Brennan entered the final round tied for the lead at 13 under with Bridgeman and Zach Bauchou. He shot a 3-under 68, hitting all 15 fairways and leading the field in strokes gained off the tee for the week, Golfweek reported.
A bogey on the 10th hole briefly cost him the lead. He recovered with birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 before closing with six consecutive pars. On the par-3 16th, he saved par by hitting a long bunker shot to within a foot of the hole.
"I was very nervous today, especially coming down the stretch," Brennan said afterward, according to Golf.com.
Bridgeman, who opened the tournament with a 63, finished tied for second at 15-under 269. He missed a 5-foot birdie putt on No. 17 that would have tied Brennan, then shot a final-round 69.
Mitchell also finished at 15 under after briefly building a two-stroke lead. He played his final 10 holes in 2 over and closed with a 68.
Defending champion Xander Schauffele tied for fourth at 13-under 271 after double-bogeying the par-4 18th.
Three PGA Tour victories in 12 months
Brennan's rise has been swift. He won his first PGA Tour event at the 2025 Bank of Utah Championship on a sponsor exemption after winning three times on PGA Tour Americas, bypassing the Korn Ferry Tour.
His second PGA Tour title came at the Wyndham Championship in August at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. He made the cut in all four majors in 2026 and finished 46th in the FedExCup standings.
The Baycurrent Classic victory moved Brennan from No. 33 to No. 20 in the Official World Golf Ranking, his highest position to date. It also secured him an exemption into the 2027 U.S. Open.
Brennan's six professional victories across PGA Tour Americas and the PGA Tour have come within approximately 14 months.
The tournament marked Brennan's first trip to Japan. His brother, Sean, flew in Saturday and watched him win in person for the first time.
Brennan is listed among PGA Tour members residing in the TPC Sawgrass area, according to the Jacksonville Area Golf Association.
He has identified the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland as his next major goal.
The FedExCup Fall continues with the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, Oct. 22-25, at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda.
