Three St. Johns County boys golf teams traded tournament titles over six days in mid-September. None pulled away.

Tocoi Creek, Ponte Vedra and Beachside each won one of three head-to-head events Sept. 14-19, the Jacksonville Times-Union reported. The county supremacy race remains unsettled heading into the Class 3A postseason.

Tocoi Creek and Ponte Vedra split early events

Tocoi Creek fired first, winning the Shark Shootout at Marsh Landing on Sept. 14 by five shots over Orlando Circle Christian. Ponte Vedra finished sixth and Beachside seventh.

Two days later, Ponte Vedra answered at the Slammer & Squire, taking the St. Johns County Championship by seven shots over Tocoi Creek. Beachside placed third, two shots further back.

Beachside dethrones Ponte Vedra at Jacksonville Beach

Then came the seventh Jacksonville Beach Invitational on Sept. 19 at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club. Beachside dethroned defending champion Ponte Vedra, winning the boys division at 5-under 283, nine shots clear of the Sharks' 292. The Jacksonville Area Golf Association helped run the event for the first time.

Beachside senior Jaspreet Kondal, committed to the University of Chattanooga, led the boys field with a 66. Teammate Jaden Nacional added a 68. Ponte Vedra's Ellis Masotti shot 72, followed by Jude Johnson (73), Ryder Averdick (73) and Maxwell Morgan (74). Nease's Rafael de Carvalho posted a 70, tying for fifth individually, but the Panthers shot 330 as a team.

In the girls division, Bolles won at 272, led by senior Chloe McGrath's 64. Beachside freshman Lily Wachter set a tournament record with a 63. Ponte Vedra's girls tied Beachside at 301, led by Nina Santiago's 71 and Charlotte Xia's 72. Nease's Mattie Velasquez led the Panthers with a 77.

The combined boys-and-girls format gave Beachside the overall title at 584, nine shots ahead of Ponte Vedra's 593. Nease finished sixth at 662.

Road to state runs through St. Johns County

"It's going to be a battle. ... Someone is going to have to go through St. Johns County to win," Ponte Vedra coach Mickey Leapley said after the Sept. 19 event. Leapley guided the Sharks to seven consecutive Florida High School Athletic Association state titles through 2024, according to the Times-Union.

The District 2-3A tournament is scheduled for Oct. 26 at Queen's Harbour. The Region 1-3A tournament follows Nov. 2 at the Golf Club at Cypress Head in Volusia County. The Class 3A state tournament is set for Nov. 13-14 at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills.
