Ponte Vedra Beach golfer Mike Smith will represent Northeast Florida as one of 20 players on the North Team at the 16th Florida Cup.

The Florida State Golf Association (FSGA) announced the rosters on Monday, Sept. 14, for the Ryder Cup-style amateur team competition at Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa. Smith is the only St. Johns County player on the North Team roster.

Format Pits North and South Amateurs

The Florida Cup pits North Florida's top amateurs against their South Florida counterparts over two days. Morning four-ball matches give way to afternoon foursomes, and the event wraps with singles matches. The team that earns the most points takes home the cup.

Smith Brings Strong Competitive Record

Smith brings a proven competitive record to the North Team. He won the 2021 Jacksonville Amateur Championship, according to the Jacksonville Area Golf Association (JAGA), and was part of the winning 2025 Underwood Cup team. In his most recent FSGA competition, Smith and partner Christian Sease of Newberry finished tied for fifth at the 77th Four-Ball Championship at Coral Creek Club in Placida on July 12.

This will be his first Florida Cup.

Fore College Golf Serves Junior Players

Off the course, Smith runs Fore College Golf out of Ponte Vedra Beach. The program, which has partnered with the FSGA's Florida Junior Golf Tour, hosts webinars and publishes resources for junior golfers pursuing college play, according to JAGA's September newsletter.

North Team Trails in Series History

The North Team enters the 16th Florida Cup trailing the all-time series, 7-8. The South Team seized the lead after a dominant 19-3 victory at the 15th Florida Cup at Streamsong Golf Resort.

Veteran Captains, Players Lead North Squad

Non-playing captains Steve Albright of Ocala and Ty Capps of Palm Coast will lead the North squad. Capps, the reigning Mid-Amateur Player of the Year, and teammate Tyler Gulliksen of Flagler Beach are four-time reigning foursomes champions. Doug Snoap of Apopka is the most seasoned North Team member, making his ninth Florida Cup appearance. Mike Finster and Brian Keenan are each making their fifth consecutive appearance for the North. Seven players, including Smith, will compete in the event for the first time.

Field Expands to Include Senior Divisions

This year's edition expands the field by adding senior and super-senior players to each roster. Players earned their spots through performance over the previous two FSGA seasons, with eight amateurs selected from the two-year amateur points list and additional slots filled by senior, super-senior and committee selections. The South Team is led by non-playing captains Carl Santos-Ocampo and JD Schlotterback, both of Naples.

The FSGA has not announced specific competition dates for the 16th Florida Cup.
