Ten families with children battling cancer each received up to $2,000 in groceries during a surprise shopping spree Tuesday, Sept. 8, in Jacksonville.
The event took place at the College Park Winn-Dixie and was organized by the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund, Action News Jax reported. Winn-Dixie, the Winn-Dixie Gives Foundation and The Players Championship sponsored and funded the spree.
The Ponte Vedra Beach-based tournament has supported more than 300 nonprofit organizations across Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties over the past 50 years, according to The Players' community page. Health, wellness and sports is one of its charitable pillars. The Players Championship also provided Winn-Dixie gift cards to Jay Fund families who could not attend in person.
Jacksonville Jaguars punter Logan Cooke and long snapper Ross Matiscik joined the families as Jay Fund celebrity ambassadors, helping them load their carts, Action News Jax reported.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
The Jay Fund, founded in 1996, provides financial, emotional and practical support to families facing pediatric cancer, covering costs such as rent, utilities, transportation and groceries. The grocery spree addressed a documented need.
Studies cited by the Jay Fund indicate 53% of its Jacksonville families experience food insecurity, according to Action News Jax.
Separately, 93% of new families see a drop in household income after a child's diagnosis. And 73% reported non-medical expenses rising by at least $250 a month, largely due to special dietary needs such as organic foods and high-calorie nutritional shakes.
The Jay Fund has distributed more than $39 million to 6,700 families since its founding, according to the organization's website. In the past year alone, the fund supported 826 families with more than $5 million in assistance, based on the organization's 2025 impact figures.
