Allen D. Nease High School opened a peer tutoring club Tuesday, with sessions available to any student who walks into the media center after school.

The Panther Prep Tutoring Club pairs juniors and seniors from the school's International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement, honors and dual-enrollment tracks with classmates who need academic help. More than 500 students used media center tutoring last year, club sponsor and media center librarian Carolyn Milian told The Vertical, Nease's student newspaper.

"We're trying to build a pool of tutors to help any students that need it," Milian said in a Sept. 15 interview with the paper. "They need to be willing to sit down and help."

New club replaces honor society program

The club replaces a tutoring program the National Honor Society ran in previous years. Under that setup, each honor society member was required to tutor for at least one hour to keep membership. Nease's IB program is now partnering with the media center to manage the effort under the Panther Prep name.

Milian has overseen tutoring in the media center for at least two years. A Sept. 19, 2025, edition of the school's Panther Press newsletter listed her as the contact for students who needed sessions outside the regular schedule. That prior honor society program held sessions from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the same days the new club uses.

Sessions twice weekly, no sign-up needed

Sessions run every Tuesday and Thursday immediately after school. No sign-up is required.

Milian said she can also arrange morning sessions for students who need a different time.

Subjects covered include algebra, chemistry, biology, precalculus and history, though the club says the list is not limited to those five. Algebra, chemistry and biology drew the most demand in past years, according to The Vertical's reporting.

Who can become a tutor

To qualify as a tutor, a student must be a junior or senior enrolled in at least one honors, AP, IB or dual-enrollment course with a weighted GPA of at least 3.8. Tutors earn volunteer hours for their service. The school has not announced how many tutors have signed up so far.

Students who want tutoring or want to tutor can find Milian in the media center on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.
