A 22-year-old Palm Coast man is in the St. Johns County Jail after Florida's facial recognition system caught him posing as his brother to get a replacement driver's license, according to WOKV.

Michael Ryan's own license had been revoked for DUI. On Sept. 17, he walked into the Flagler County Tax Collector's branch on St. Joe Plaza Drive in Palm Coast, told clerks he had lost his license and claimed to be his brother, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said, according to WOKV. Ryan provided his brother's Social Security number and posed for a new photo.

The scheme didn't last long.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles operates a statewide biometric facial recognition database that cross-matches photos taken at tax collector counters against existing driver records, Hoodline reported. The system flagged Ryan's photo, and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles Fraud Division confirmed the applicant was Ryan, not his brother.

Flagler County Sheriff's Office detectives secured an arrest warrant for Ryan on Oct. 8. He was charged with obtaining a driver's license by fraud, a third-degree felony under Florida Statutes Section 322.212(5)(a). The charge carries up to five years in prison, five years of probation and a $5,000 fine.

Ryan turned himself in Friday, Oct. 9, at the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office in St. Augustine. He was booked into the St. Johns County Jail on $2,500 bond.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly commented when his office announced the arrest Sunday, Oct. 11.

"This guy certainly won't win the brother of the year award," Staly said. "This is just a series of stupid decisions by Ryan to skirt the law."

The case is moving through Flagler County's court system.
